I'm Not David

faith gospel Mar 31, 2022

I have been meeting with a group of women for about 4 years. We get together once a week and study God’s word. This past month we have been working through a book called Goliath Must Fall by Louie Giglio. We all loved it! If you have not read it, I would encourage you to.  This book helps to identify the giants in your life. Some of the metaphorical “giants” Giglio described we did not think we struggled with, but soon we began to relate to the scenarios. The book also takes you into a deeper understanding of the account of David and Goliath.

Have you ever really thought through the account of David and Goliath? Most people know the story from their childhood. A young boy takes out the giant with a single rock. We think David represents us in the story… at least that was my understanding as a child. We grow up trying to take out our giants with a rock and the giant mocks us and laughs back in our face.  We live in fear and struggle and oftentimes defeat. The reason our giant doesn’t fall is because, (spoiler alert), we are not David in the story. We are the Israelite soldiers standing on the sidelines ready for battle, trying to figure out what to do, believing all of the mocking ridicule that Goliath is spewing. But wait… if you are not David, then who is? Jesus!  Jesus is David in the story.  Jesus is the one who defeats the giant and He still defeats our giants today.

This was not the only part that stood out to me in this study. When David came to Saul and volunteered to fight the giant, Saul told him he wasn’t able to (1 Sam 17:32). How many times do we do this in our lives? How many times do we tell Jesus, “You can defeat this, but not that. I trust you Jesus to heal this, but not that”?  We forget that He has rescued us from the mouth of our foe.

Not only did Saul think David was incompetent; he even forces David to wear his own massive armor. David knew all he needed was the Lord Almighty (1 Sam 17:45).  How often do we try to equip Jesus to handle our giants? We think it should look this way or that way. We need to pray these special words in this order. I do this all the time: “Jesus, heal me in this way.” “It should look like this.” “Jesus, defeat my giant my way.” But He knows the way, doesn’t He?  Does he really need my counsel?  My armor?  All we need to do is trust Him.  I mean, who better to care for me than my Creator!
